Tax, books and insurance for freight brokers

You match loads with carriers. We file your broker authority, write your BMC-84 bond and keep the books that tell you which lanes pay.

New and growing freight brokerages work with our office for broker authority, BOC-3 and UCR filings, the $75,000 broker bond, contingent cargo coverage and bookkeeping built around gross margin per load.

Freight brokers and logistics

A business built on thin margins and fast cash

A brokerage bills the shipper, pays the carrier and keeps the difference. Revenue looks large, the margin is what matters, and cash can get tight when shippers pay in 45 days and carriers want quick pay.

Our office files your authority, our agency writes the surety bond and contingent coverage brokers need, and your books track margin load by load so you can see which customers and lanes are worth keeping.

Special needs

What makes brokerage different, and how we help

The questions new brokers bring to our office most often.

01

Getting authority active

FMCSA will not activate broker authority until your $75,000 BMC-84 bond or BMC-85 trust and your BOC-3 are on file.

How we helpWe prepare the filing, our agency writes the bond, and we file the BOC-3 so your authority goes active without gaps.

02

Contingent coverage

Shippers expect the broker to stand behind the load when a carrier's policy does not pay.

How we helpOur agency quotes contingent cargo and contingent auto liability alongside general liability and errors and omissions.

03

Revenue versus margin

Gross billings can be ten times what the business actually keeps, which confuses lenders and makes tax estimates look wrong.

How we helpWe set up QuickBooks to show gross margin per load and per customer, with carrier pay matched to each shipment.

04

Carrier payments and 1099s

Brokers pay many carriers, some through factoring companies, and need W-9s and the right year end reporting.

How we helpWe collect W-9s, track payments to carriers and factors, and prepare 1099s where they are required.

Questions

What freight brokers ask us

What do I need to start a freight brokerage?

A company, a USDOT number with MC broker authority, a $75,000 BMC-84 bond or BMC-85 trust, a BOC-3 process agent filing and UCR registration. FMCSA activates the authority once the bond and BOC-3 are on file.

How much does a BMC-84 bond cost?

The bond is $75,000, but you pay a yearly premium, often about $1,500 to $2,000 for a new broker with good credit. Our agency writes the bond and quotes it with your other coverage.

Is my revenue the full freight bill?

For most brokers, yes, the full amount billed to the shipper is revenue and carrier pay is cost of revenue. Your margin is what is left. We set up the books so both are clear.
