Grocery and convenience stores

Many products, many tax rates

A single receipt can mix general merchandise, groceries, prepared food and exempt SNAP purchases. Each is taxed differently, and local grocery taxes changed in many Illinois towns in 2026.

Our office sets up your POS and books so each category is taxed correctly, reconciles lottery and cash daily, and our agency covers your store, stock and staff.

Special needs

What makes grocery different, and how we help

Where store owners most often need help.

01

Mixed tax rates

Illinois taxes general merchandise at the high rate and qualifying food at the low rate, and many towns adopted their own grocery taxes for 2026. SNAP purchases are exempt.

02

Lottery and money services

Lottery sales, prizes paid and commissions run through the same drawer as groceries.

How we helpWe reconcile lottery activity each week and record commissions as income.

03

Cash-heavy days

Cash sales make daily reconciliation essential and are a common audit focus.

How we helpWe tie your POS reports to deposits so your books hold up to review.

04

Spoilage and equipment

A cooler failure overnight can spoil thousands in stock.

How we helpOur agency quotes store coverage that includes equipment breakdown and spoilage options.

Questions

What grocery and convenience stores ask us

Is food taxed in Illinois?

Qualifying groceries are taxed at a lower rate than general merchandise. The state grocery tax ended January 1, 2026, and many local governments adopted their own grocery tax, so the rate depends on your location.

Are SNAP purchases taxable?

No. Purchases paid with SNAP benefits are exempt from sales tax. Your POS should track them separately.

How are lottery commissions taxed?

Lottery commissions are business income. We reconcile them to your lottery statements and include them on your return.
