Retail and e-commerce

Sales everywhere, tax everywhere

Online sales can create sales tax obligations in states where you have never set foot, and marketplace payouts rarely match the sales on your return without careful reconciliation.

Our office sets up your books to separate gross sales, fees, refunds and taxes, tracks your nexus state by state and files the returns you need.

Special needs

What makes retail different, and how we help

Where sellers most often need help.

01

Economic nexus

Most states require sellers to collect tax once sales into the state pass a threshold, even without a physical presence.

How we helpWe review your sales by state, register where needed and file each return on time.

02

Marketplace facilitator rules

Amazon and similar marketplaces collect tax for you in most states, but your own site does not.

How we helpWe separate marketplace and direct sales so you never pay tax twice or miss it once.

03

Payouts are not sales

Deposits are net of fees, refunds and reserves, and Form 1099-K shows gross amounts.

How we helpWe reconcile payouts to gross sales, fees and refunds so your return matches your forms.

04

Inventory and cost of goods

Inventory at warehouses, in transit and at fulfillment centers must be counted and costed.

How we helpWe track inventory and landed cost so your margins and taxes are accurate.

QuickBooks Online

Books built for retailers and online sellers

Your QuickBooks shows sales by channel, so you know whether your store, your site or the marketplace earns the most.

Our office sets up QuickBooks Online with a chart of accounts designed for your industry and your entity type, mapped line by line to your tax return. Your books are ready for filing season all year.

Questions

What retailers and online sellers ask us

Do I have to collect sales tax in other states?

Once your sales into a state pass its economic nexus threshold, usually a dollar amount of sales, you generally must register and collect. We review your sales by state.

Does Amazon collect sales tax for me?

In most states, yes, as the marketplace facilitator. Sales on your own website are still your responsibility.

Why does my 1099-K not match my bank deposits?

Form 1099-K reports gross sales before fees and refunds. We reconcile the difference so your return is right.
