Big choices change taxes. Most people see it late.

01

A bonus with no withholding plan

Extra income or an equity payout can leave you short when the return is filed.

02

Contribution room left unused

Retirement and HSA room that goes unused for a year often cannot be made up later.

03

Life events, then a surprise

Marriage, a new child, a move or a home sale can change your return in ways that show up months later.

FAQs

Good questions.

What does tax-aware financial planning cover?
The tax side of your financial decisions: income timing, deductions, retirement and HSA contributions, estimated payments and the tax effect of life events.
Should I contribute to a Roth or a traditional account?
It depends on your tax rate now compared with the rate you expect in retirement, among other factors. We compare both for your situation.
How do estimated payments work?
If withholding will not cover your tax, the IRS expects quarterly estimates, generally due April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15. Paying at least your prior-year tax on time, or 110% if prior-year AGI was over $150,000, usually avoids the underpayment penalty.
Is the sale of my home taxable?
Often not all of it. If you owned and lived in the home for two of the last five years, you may exclude up to $250,000 of gain, or $500,000 if married filing jointly.
Can you help if I move to another state?
Yes. We map the part-year returns and residency rules for both states so the move brings no surprises at filing time.
