How to start a scrap metal business
- 1
Form the company and get an EIN
Our office forms your LLC or corporation in the state where you operate and gets the EIN, so your scale tickets, bank account and truck titles are in the company name.
- 2
Check zoning and state licensing
Scrap yards need the right zoning. Many states license or register scrap metal dealers, and buying vehicles or vehicle parts for scrap often needs a separate state license.
- 3
File local licenses and permits
Cities and counties often license scrap dealers, junk haulers and recycling facilities, and some require environmental permits. Check the rules for your yard address and the towns where you collect.
- 4
Set up purchase records
Most states require scrap buyers to record each purchase, copy the seller's photo ID and describe the material. Many states also restrict buying catalytic converters and paying cash.
- 5
Insure the yard and run payroll
Our agency quotes general liability, commercial auto, equipment and pollution coverage. Our office runs payroll and keeps your books in QuickBooks Online.
