How to start a trucking company

  1. 1

Form your company and get an EIN

Our office forms your LLC or corporation in the state where you form and gets your EIN, so your authority, plates and bank account are in the company name.

  2. 2

Apply for USDOT and MC authority

Our office prepares your FMCSA application and BOC-3. You complete the identity check in Motus yourself. The FMCSA fee is $300 per authority.

  3. 3

Bind insurance and register for UCR

Our agency quotes auto liability, cargo and physical damage and files proof with FMCSA. Our office files your UCR, which is priced by fleet size.

  4. 4

Set up IRP plates, IFTA and Form 2290

Interstate trucks over 26,000 pounds need IRP plates and an IFTA license from your base state. Our office files Form 2290 for trucks at 55,000 pounds or more.

  5. 5

Keep books, taxes and payroll current

File your fuel tax returns each quarter. Our office keeps your books in QuickBooks Online, runs payroll for drivers and files your federal and state income tax returns.

Questions

What new owners ask us.

How long does it take to get MC authority?
FMCSA usually grants the USDOT number quickly. MC authority becomes active after a public protest period and once your insurance filing and BOC-3 are on record. Timing depends on FMCSA review. Our office files the BOC-3 and our agency sends the insurance filing so nothing holds up activation.
Do I need IFTA and IRP if I only run in one state?
Generally no. IFTA and IRP apply to qualified vehicles that cross state lines, usually over 26,000 pounds or with three or more axles. A carrier that stays inside one state follows that state's registration and fuel tax rules instead, and some states also require intrastate operating authority. Check with your state's motor carrier office before you haul.
What insurance does a new trucking company need?
For-hire carriers of general freight across state lines must carry at least $750,000 in auto liability, and higher limits apply to some hazardous loads. Most shippers and brokers also ask for $1,000,000 liability and motor truck cargo coverage. Our agency quotes liability, cargo, physical damage and workers compensation together.
What is Form 2290 and when is it due?
Form 2290 reports the federal heavy vehicle use tax on trucks with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. The tax year runs July through June, and the return is generally due by August 31, or by the end of the month after a new truck is first used. Our office e-files it and gets your stamped Schedule 1.
